The Hidden Power of Prioritization in Relationships
How Clarifying What Matters Most Can Transform Your Connection
In my recent conversation on Rejuvenaging with Dr. Ron Kaiser, we explored a fundamental truth about relationships that often goes unnoticed: priorities—not just love—determine long-term success.
Most couples assume they are on the same page, but over time, subtle shifts in priorities create distance. The problem isn’t a lack of love—it’s a lack of clarity. If you don’t actively check in on where your relationship stands, you risk drifting apart without realizing it.
Let’s dive into why this happens and how to fix it.
The Unspoken Drift: Why Couples Lose Alignment
Relationships don’t usually break down overnight. The disconnect happens in small, almost imperceptible ways:
✅ You assume you and your partner still want the same things—without checking.
✅ You keep running into the same arguments, but never truly resolve them.
✅ One partner is changing, evolving, or reprioritizing—and the other hasn’t noticed.
💡 This is what I call “Priority Drift.” Unlike values (which tend to stay stable), priorities shift over time based on life circumstances, goals, and personal growth. When couples don’t regularly check in, they start operating from old assumptions—leading to misalignment, frustration, and eventual distance.
How to Spot a Hidden Misalignment
Dr. Kaiser and I discussed how couples rarely recognize misalignment until it causes conflict. You might think you’re arguing about money, time, or intimacy, but those surface-level tensions are usually symptoms of deeper priority misalignment.
🚨 Warning Signs of Priority Misalignment:
📌 Repeating the same arguments without resolution.
📌 Feeling unseen or misunderstood in your relationship.
📌 One partner feeling like they are “pulling more weight” in an area the other doesn’t prioritize.
📌 Making assumptions about what your partner values, rather than asking.
The good news? These issues are preventable—if you start measuring alignment intentionally.
The Total Difference Score (TDS): A Simple Way to Measure Relationship Alignment
To solve this problem, I created the Total Difference Score (TDS), a framework that gives couples a clear, measurable way to check alignment.
🔹 How It Works:
1️⃣ Each partner ranks 10 core life priorities (career, health, finances, communication, growth, etc.).
2️⃣ Compare your rankings—revealing alignment and hidden misalignments.
3️⃣ The greater the difference in rankings, the more attention that area needs.
💡 Think of TDS as a GPS for your relationship. Instead of hoping you’re on the same page, you know exactly where you stand and where adjustments are needed.
Realigning Your Relationship: The 3-Step Fix
Once you spot misalignment, the key is adjustment—not perfection. Here’s how to realign:
✅ Step 1: The 3-Minute Priority Check-In
Sit down and ask: What are my top 3 priorities right now? Have your partner do the same. Compare lists—are you still aligned, or are there shifts you need to talk about?
✅ Step 2: The “Misalignment Doesn’t Mean Wrong” Rule
Many couples make the mistake of thinking different priorities = a broken relationship. The real goal isn’t to have identical priorities, but to understand them and create a shared strategy.
✅ Step 3: Small Adjustments = Big Results
Once you see your misalignment areas, focus on micro-adjustments instead of dramatic changes. Tiny shifts in communication, attention, and shared planning make a massive impact over time.
Final Thought: Alignment Is an Ongoing Process
The strongest relationships aren’t the ones that never struggle—they’re the ones that continuously adapt and realign.
📌 Prioritize Us isn’t just a book—it’s a system for lasting connection.
